Special Guest Instructor-Sue’s back in Sept!

ABSTRACT CARDIGAN                     Friday September 12th       10AM – 5PM (including 1 ½ hr lunch break)

Sue Thompson    $50 for 1 class

The Abstract Cardigan designed by Leigh Radford is like a modern impressionist painting. The individual parts of the sweater are knit from yarns of different gauges using a variety of needle sizes. The addition of knit accent panels and trim yarns turn this sweater into a masterpiece. The knitting is not difficult and the class will cover the importance of gauge, attaching the trims and panels and the short row shaping on the sleeves. Here is the opportunity to put fibers of different gauges together to make one sensational garment and let your own creativity shine!

GLORIA JACKET                    Saturday September 20th 10 AM – 5PM (including 1 ½ hr lunch break)

Sue Thompson    $50 for 1 class

This design from Hanne Falkenberg looked great on everyone at the knitting retreat at High Hampton and was the crowd favorite.  The Gloria Jacket’s main feature is a large shawl collar which becomes a flare in the back. It is knit in garter stitch using a texture pattern of one row stripes of 3 colors. The construction, like many of Hanne’s designs is brilliant and unique.  First, the top section of the back is knit from side to side. Then, stitches are picked up along the bottom of this piece which becomes the fronts, collar and lower back. After the shoulders are joined, the sleeves are knit from the top, down.  This garment is knit on a US 6 (most of Hanne’s designs are done on 2s or 3s).

INGRID SKIRT                        Sunday September 21st                    Noon – 5 PM

Sue Thompson    $50 for 1 class

Here is another terrific skirt pattern by Trudy Van Stralen from Louet.  This skirt is knit from the bottom up, beginning with a deep lace ruffle pattern that forms an asymmetric bias towards the side seams. The pattern along with the nature of linen allows the ruffle to drape beautifully.  Short rows on the center front and back keep the lace in position. This skirt can be made in 3 sizes and lengths. The way the skirt is constructed, lends itself to the possibility of using 2 colors, one for the ruffle and another for the rest of the skirt. Once the knitting is finished, there is very little finishing that needs to be done. With linen being machine washable and dryable, what could be better?  This class is suitable for intermediate level knitters, who have had some experience with doing YOs and K 2 tog patterns and short rows, but all will be explained in class. This is a very flattering garment that looks as good as it feels!

UNDULATING WAVES SCARF WITH BEADS          Monday September 15th                   6 PM – 9 PM

Sue Thompson    $30 for 1 class

Beads have been used in making beautiful jewelry and accessories for centuries, so why not add them to our knitting for a little extra pizzazz? This scarf is knit from Schaefer Yarn’s Susan, a 100% pima cotton making it wearable year round. The Undulating Waves lace pattern resembles entrelac, but is easier. The beads are placed at the yarn-overs and secured into position on the following row. You’ll get the hang of it after a couple pattern repeats.

WET FELTED FLOWERS and LEAVES                       Tuesday September 16th   6 PM – 9 PM

Sue Thompson    $30 for 1 class + $20 for kit

While most of us have knit and machine felted pieces in the washing machine, here is the opportunity to explore the world of ‘wet felting’. Using roving (yarn before it’s spun), hot soapy water and mechanical agitation (with our hands) we are going to create fabric that will be cut, molded, and shaped to become flowers and leaves. Sew to a felted purse or add a pin for a fabulous embellishment.

THE SPIRAL SCARF              Thursday September 18th                6 PM – 9 PM

Sue Thompson    $30 for 1 class

By using short rows and increases, Laura Bryant of Prism has created a scarf that is as much fun to wear as it is to knit. The short rows create a spiral that naturally drapes around the neck as well as creates subtle flounces along the bottom edge of the scarf. This project is knit in garter stitch and can be made from a wide variety of fibers. It can be knit longer to be more of a wrap. Get a good start on this project during class time and leave with a full understanding of what short rows are, how to do them and how they are used as a design element. This class is suitable for all levels of knitters.

THE SWIRL SHAWL              Friday September 19th                      6 PM – 9PM

Sue Thompson    $30 for 1 class

This dramatic shawl is a modular knitting project, where the individual elements are hexagons with a spiral or swirl design in each section.  Each module is knit in the round from the outside to the center, and is done in 16 rounds. This can be done with double points OR the magic loop (which will be demonstrated in class). The shawl gets built in rows with one hexagon getting added to the next.  It may look complex, but you only have to master it once! The design, combined with the long floats of color of the Jojoland Melody yarn will have everyone wondering how you made it.

SOCKS ON ONE LONG CIRCULAR NEEDLE            Mondays              6pm– 8pm            Beginning August 11th

Eunice Williams    $30 for 2 classes

This is our new favorite way to knit socks!  It’s faster than double points or 2 circulars and there’ll be no ladders between needles to worry about. Even if you thought you’d never knit socks, (Renee, for instance) this will change your mind.  Once you’re comfortable with this new method you can use it for mittens or gloves as well as for knitting sleeves and neckbands on your sweaters.

NOW - KNIT 2 SOCKS AT ONCE                      Mondays              6pm– 8pm            Beginning August 26th

Eunice Williams    $30 for 2 classes

Now that you’ve learned to zip through knitting 1 sock on a long circular you’re ready to work on 2 at one time.  End Second-Sock-Syndrome forever. (You know the frustration: the first sock is done - who wants to knit the same project all over again?)

Prerequisite - you must have knitted at least one complete sock using the magic loop method.
